What is Rett Syndrome?
Rett Syndrome is a brain disorder, it has a known genetic cause that was discovered in (1999) and recent research has proven the theory of reversibility in mice (2007). It exclusively affects girls at the rate of 1 birth every 5 hours. Those diagnosed have no purposeful hand use due to their repetitive hand movements, hand wringing, and mouthing. Speech is lost, seizures develop and scoliosis occurs. More than half of the girls and women lose their ability to walk and will require assistance with even the most basic of life's daily activities. This disorder is on the AUTISM-SPECTRUM and is often characterized as the "Rosetta Stone", or the key that will help unlock treatments and cures for other disorders with genetic links including autism, schizophrenia, Parkinson's, anxiety and autonomic nervous system disorders. Although these girls are the victims of one of the most cruel biological accidents imaginable, we can see a light at the end of the tunnel. By participating in our day of events, you are giving a "voice" to these silent angels and letting them know their futures do matter. Our daughter Kate is one of approximately 25 known cases of Rett Syndrome in Iowa. We hope you can find a way to make it a successful day for all of us affected by Rett Syndrome.
